Regular oil changes are essential for keeping your BMW X1 xDrive28i running smoothly. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you perform this maintenance task at home. This process applies to similar BMW models as well.

Tools and Materials Needed

  • Car jack and jack stands (or a car lift)

  • 17mm socket and wrench

  • Torx wrench (for oil filter drain bolt)

  • Oil filter wrench

  • New oil filter (specific to your model)

  • Fresh engine oil (refer to your owner’s manual for specifications)

  • Funnel

  • Drain pan

  • Torque wrench

  • Gloves and safety glasses

  • Shop towels or rags

Step 1: Prepare Your Workspace

  1. Park your car on a level surface and engage the parking brake.

  2. Allow the engine to cool for at least 30 minutes.

  3. Gather all tools and materials to ensure you’re ready to start.

Step 2: Elevate and Secure the Car

  1. Use a car jack to lift the vehicle, ensuring you use the correct jacking points as specified in the owner's manual.

  2. Place jack stands under the car for added safety and ensure the vehicle is stable before working underneath it.

Step 3: Drain the Old Oil

  1. Place a drain pan under the oil pan.

  2. Locate the 17mm drain bolt on the oil pan and use the socket wrench to loosen it. Be prepared for the oil to flow out quickly.

  3. Let the oil drain completely. This may take a few minutes.

  4. Reinstall the drain bolt and tighten it securely.

Step 4: Replace the Oil Filter

  1. Locate the oil filter housing. It is underneath the car, positioned between the radiator and the engine.

  2. Use a Torx wrench to remove the drain bolt at the bottom of the oil filter housing to let any remaining oil drain out.

  3. Remove the oil filter housing cover using the appropriate tool and take out the old oil filter.

  4. Replace the filter with a new one, ensuring you also replace the O-ring provided in the new filter kit.

  5. Lightly coat the new O-ring with fresh engine oil to ensure a proper seal.

  6. Reinstall the oil filter cover onto the housing. Tighten it using the following torque specifications:

    • Lightly oil the O-ring.

    • Perform an initial tightening to 25 Nm.

    • Loosen the cover by 180°.

    • Retighten to a final torque of 25 Nm.

  7. Lastly, tighten the Oil drain plug to oil filter cover to 5 Nm

Step 5: Add New Engine Oil

  1. Remove the oil filler cap on top of the engine.

  2. Use a funnel to pour in the recommended amount and type of oil for your BMW (refer to your owner’s manual).

  3. Replace the oil filler cap and wipe away any spilled oil.

Step 6: Check for Leaks and Finalize

  1. Start the engine and let it run for a minute. Check for any leaks around the drain bolt and oil filter housing.

  2. Turn off the engine and wait a few minutes for the oil to settle.

  3. Check the oil level using the dipstick or electronic measurement system (if equipped). Add more oil if necessary.

Step 7: Dispose of Old Oil Properly

Take the used oil and oil filter to a local recycling center or auto parts store that accepts oil waste. Do not dispose of it in household trash or down the drain.

Final Tips

  • Always consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual for specific details about oil type and capacity.

  • Regular oil changes, approximately every 5,000 to 7,500 miles, can significantly prolong the life of your engine.

  • If you’re unsure about any step, consider seeking help from a professional mechanic.
